Florida Clean Boating Partnership
The Clean Boating Partnership, a public/private effort, is a liaison between the State of Florida and the marine industry. The Partnership has developed four specific programs to encourage environmentally-friendly practices, beyond regulatory requirements, in and around Florida’s waterways.
In forming the Clean Boating Partnership (CBP), Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Division of Law Enforcement became partners with the Marine Industry Association of Florida, the Florida Sea Grant Program, the International Marina Institute, the United States Coast Guard and representatives of privately-owned, as well as publicly owned marinas throughout Florida.
Through workshops held around the state, members of the CBP are available to provide training and “mentoring,” which is accessible to all. From the beginning, the CBP has had one goal: clean waterways for all, whether it is for business, industry or recreation.
The partnership approach targets four main areas: boaters, marinas, boatyards and marine retailers.
The Clean Marina, Clean Boatyard and Clean Marine Retailer Programs focus on owner/operators of facilities catering to the boating community through slip rentals, painting, repair, maintenance, fueling, supplies, sales and other services.
This is accomplished through workshops, technical assistance and conferences. A facility can become “designated” as clean facility by following a detailed action plan checklist and meeting current environmental regulations. Once the facility has a verification “walk through” by members of the CBP and District DEP, a facility is then recommended for designation.
A ceremony may be held where the facility receives their designation plaque and flag to fly over their business. Designated facilities in Florida receive press and are also identified on the DEP website and in publications such as the Florida Cruising Directory and Florida’s Marina Guide.

The Clean Boater Program zeros in on the recreational aspect of waterway access, addressing through the “Clean Boating Habits” booklet such topics as Hurricane Preparedness, Boat Cleaning, Petroleum Control, Boaters Impact on Plant and Sea Life, and many other areas. Boaters are asked to take the “Clean Boater Pledge”, at which time they receive the booklet, a Clean Boater Sticker for their vessel, and other items to keep on board to remind them of their commitment to help keep Florida’s waters clean for all to enjoy.
